TheGunBlog.ca — Concern about gun bans is surging to a record on Google in Canada, as the governing Liberal Party prepares to take away firearms from more hunters, farmers, sport shooters and collectors.

Google Trends for Canada shows May is on course for the highest monthly interest in the term “gun ban” using the world’s most-popular Internet search tool going back to January 2004.

Search Spike

Searches spiked to the maximum level of 100 on May 10, after an independent member of parliament said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will order a “sweeping gun ban” against federally licensed firearm owners next month.

The government is also about to pass Bill C-71 as a new law to simplify bans as the Liberals seek re-election in October. The bill will begin by ordering the confiscation of rifles from more than 10,000 families after the owners die.

Liberal Bans

The previous Google-search high of 63 followed the Liberals’ December 2005 pledge to eliminate civilian handgun ownership if they won the January 2006 election. They lost.

Searches jumped to 52 in March this year after Bill Blair, the Liberal minister exploring mass gun confiscation, told CTV News the government is preparing “pretty big measures” to restrict gun owners.

Blair told CTV News last week the government isn’t ruling out a confiscation order before the election.

More Canadian Than Hockey

Hunting and shooting are at the heart of Canadian culture and heritage, and more men and women have police-authorized firearm licences than play hockey.

All guns are banned already for everyone who doesn’t have a permit.

Bans for Votes

An Angus Reid Institute survey published yesterday is the latest opinion poll showing Liberal voters are the most hostile to gun owners in favouring bans.

A government adviser concluded last year after an earlier poll that new restrictions and prohibitions on police-vetted firearm users present an “untapped opportunity” for the Liberals to win re-election.

Immediate Surrender

Bill C-71 could become law within days. In the unlikely case it is defeated, existing laws allow the Liberals to order gun bans anytime and trigger their immediate surrender or confiscation.
