TheGunBlog.ca — The RCMP, which controls private gun ownership in Canada, said more than 100,000 hunters, sport shooters, firearm collectors and other owners may have been targeted in this month’s order for mass confiscations.

The total includes both of the following:

  • a known number of federally licensed owners required by law to have registered 105,000 of their newly banned “Restricted” rifles with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
  • an unknown number of people who didn’t have to register an unknown number of newly banned “Non-restricted” guns.

RCMP Statement

Catherine Fortin, a spokeswoman for the RCMP in Ottawa, made the following comment to TheGunBlog.ca today by e-mail in response to our request for information on the number of targeted people and firearms:

More than 1,500 models of assault-style firearms are affected, along with certain component parts of some newly prohibited firearms, (upper receivers of the M16, AR-10, AR-15 and M4 pattern of firearms). This number includes firearms that are now prohibited by maximum thresholds for muzzle energy, (greater than 10,000 Joules), and bore diameter (20 mm bore or greater). Any firearm that exceeds these thresholds is now a prohibited firearm.

Overall, the prohibition includes over 105,000 restricted firearms and could potentially impact over 100,000 owners. The number of non-restricted firearms is unknown.

Why It Matters

The May 1 order threatening jail unless owners surrender their gear within two years is one of the biggest crackdowns against honest citizens by any democracy in history.

The governing Liberal Party, which instantly made it a crime to buy, sell, transport or import more than 125,000 rifles and shotguns, is going after Canada’s 300,000 handgun owners next.
