TheGunBlog.ca — Canada’s Liberal Party-led administration passed a decree today to expand its attacks against government-licensed firearm users, as it works to suppress gun owners, destroy the firearm industry, and weaken safety and security.
Summary
- New criminalization and confiscation order (OIC) took effect today.
- Ban List of 324 Newly ‘Prohibited’ Rifle Models
- Armalite AR-180B and SIG 540 are on the list, SKS isn’t.
- Ban list to be expanded again by February, magazine prohibitions coming in March 2025, plus new import prohibitions.
324 Models Added to Ban List
Today’s “order in council” (OIC), as the decree is formally known, added 324 unique rifle makes and models to some 2,000 types that were banned through a similar order on 01 May 2020.
- Targeted owners and businesses now risk jail if they buy, sell, transport, transfer the ownership, or use any of the models.
- The OIC turns models with labels of “Non-Restricted” and “Restricted” into “Prohibited.”
- The Armalite AR-180B, SIG 540, and several .22-calibre rifles were banned today.
- The Liberals had said since May 2023 they were planning such a measure.
- The Liberals said they plan more prohibitions, confiscations and restrictions targeting government-licensed firearm users.
‘Prohibition Takes Effect Today’
“This prohibition takes effect today,” Dominic LeBlanc, the Liberal minister overseeing the crackdown, said today at a media briefing.
“Our work isn’t finished,” he said.
SKS Owners Safe for Now
Notable among those excluded from today’s attacks are owners of the SKS, Canada’s bestselling centrefire, semi-automatic rifle.
They may be targeted when the Liberals expand the ban list in February “at the latest,” LeBlanc said.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a key confiscation partner for the Liberals, generated today’s list and is reviewing about 230 more models to prohibit.
Confiscate From Canadians, Send to Ukrainians
The Liberals want to seize rifles from Canadians to send the life-saving equipment to Ukrainians, Liberal Minister Bill Blair said at the media briefing.
Conservatives Criticize But Don’t Commit
The Conservative Party, forecast to win the next election, criticized the Liberals, without committing to ending the confiscations.
“Instead of locking up criminals and reversing his laws that have contributed to the alarming explosion of crime in our country, Trudeau chose to attack lawful and vetted hunters, sport shooters, and Indigenous Peoples who safely and legally use firearms as they have done for generations,” Conservative MP Raquel Dancho said in a statement from the party.
Context
- Targeted firearm owners have no intention or incentive to surrender their goods to a political regime that will almost certainly be out of office before the confiscation deadline of 30 October 2025.
- The Liberals are appearing increasingly weak, desperate, and extreme in their crackdowns against honest citizens. The public and even anti-gun media are increasingly seeing their anti-gun hysteria as politically motivated theatre with high costs, no benefit, and high potential harms.
- They have no idea how to execute their confiscation fantasies, and no budget to pay for them. They’ve missed all their confiscation milestones, and twice delayed the deadline to complete the assault begun in May 2020. They had hoped to complete it 2.5 years ago, and have yet to begin.
- The Federal Court of Appeal begins a two-day hearing next week to hear a case brought by firearm users challenging the mass criminalizations and confiscations.
