RCMP Redesigns Canadian Firearms Program Website

TheGunBlog.ca — The Royal Canadian Mounted Police redesigned the website for its Canadian Firearms Program, which manages licensing for the country’s 2.2 million gun-licence holders and tracks when they buy and sell guns.

“The Canadian Firearms Program website has a new look!” the Ottawa-based agency said today on its new homepage. “The website has been updated to help you find information more easily. Please update your bookmarks.”

The agency has said previously:

  • It’s working to publish its Firearms Reference Table of opinions on gun classifications.
  • It’s working on an online portal for the thousands of hunters, farmers, ranchers, sport shooters and collectors who will need to contact the RCMP every day to request authorization to buy or sell so-called “Non-restricted” rifles and shotguns under Bill C-71.

Following are comments by Caroline Duval, a spokeswoman for the RCMP. She e-mailed them to TheGunBlog.ca in response to our questions:

  • The Canadian Firearms Program’s (CFP) website was updated on November 28, 2019.
  • The CFP website has not been updated in several years and was due for an update.Regularly updating and reviewing Government of Canada websites is common practice.
  • The updates to the CFP website make the site more modern and mobile friendly and ensure a  consistent look and structure to other RCMP web pages.
  • The brand new look and structure of the website will help users find the information they need quickly and easily.
  • There are no changes to the rules regarding firearms licensing and registration. Only the look and structure of the website have been updated.
  • The new website is in compliance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat Standards on web usability and accessibility.
  • Bookmarks to pages from the old site will no longer work and should be updated to the new links.
