Police to Arrest Martial Artists for Combat Sport. Who’s Next?

The organizers of a Brazilian jiu-jitsu championship in Quebec said they cancelled the martial-arts event after police threatened to arrest participants for practicing an illegal combat sport.

Montreal police said the sport violated Section 83 of Canada’s Criminal Code on “prize fights” involving strikes with fists, hands or feet, even though Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a grappling art that doesn’t involve strikes, Canada National Pro Jiu-Jitsu said Saturday on its Facebook page. The cancellation was reported by CBC News.

Police told the organizers that “they would proceed to enforce the section to arrest any participant in the tournament,” the group said on Facebook. “Furthermore, they informed the committee that the Municipal Prosecutor of Montreal intended to prosecute every such case to court.”

Shooters in Quebec and across Canada should be asking an important question: Which sport gets shut down next?
